A group of SMU students participated in the recording of a special year-end feature by Channel NewsAsia, which covered some of the biggest stories and issues of 2015. The programme featured a distinguished panel, in addition to academics, students and various professionals who made up the audience. The panel discussed some of the key issues that have stood out in 2015 in Singapore, including the 2015 General Election (and the new cabinet); the various policies rolled out by the government (such as SkillsFuture and the Pioneer Generation card); economic issues and the formation of “The Future Economy” committee; as well as the Singapore identity (Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s funeral and the Sabah earthquake. SMU undergraduate Kenneth Yeo asked the panel to share more about SkillsFuture and how Singaporeans can benefit from it. People’s Action Party Member of Parliament Janil Puthucheary [a panel member] noted that the whole approach of SkillsFuture is to break down the artificial barrier between education and being in the workforce, adding that this requires education institutions, employers and students to shift their mind-set and the way they engage their work and education.
