SMU Dean of Students Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan commented on the findings of LinkedIn’s global survey on ‘success’, which sought to understand what ‘success’ means to professionals. She said, “Salaries are no longer the singular dimension that defines whether we are satisfied in the workplace. This is not to say that salary is not important but there are other things, the survey tells us – the more intrinsic notions of happiness, satisfaction, not being stressed out.” The survey showed that happiness (76%) is the top indicator of success among professionals, 46% of respondents listed promotions as an indicator of success, 35% listed earning a six-figure annual salary, while 31% chose pay rises.
