SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan was asked to comment and answer questions on the reasons for Singapore’s low Total Fertility Rate, which was at a 7-year low of 1.16 in 2017. She discussed the problems some face in finding a suitable marriage partner, why couples delay starting a family or choose to remain childless, if such choices are due to selfishness, whether the perceived value of marriage and family life has declined, if government policies can lower people’s expectations or marriage and whether Singapore will be able to surmount the perceived problem of the low fertility rate.
