Commenting on how the progress of technology has impacted our social habits, SMU Associate Professor of Psychology Norman Li remarked that it has led to many people easily completing tasks on their own. He explained that as people get busier, they also become less willing to collaborate with others, especially on simple tasks. By completing these tasks on their own using technology, people gain a sense of accomplishment. However, Assoc Prof Li pointed out that human interaction should not be replaced by social media, adding that if we continue to miss out on chances for human interaction, we may become lonely, anxious or depressed. He concluded that being solitary for extended periods may cause one to be less sociable, and this may result in a fragmented society.
