Commenting on why Singaporeans are delaying marriage and parenthood, SMU Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan remarked that getting married and having children was the mark of adulthood, but today independence and financial stability are seen as more important milestones. Prof Straughan thinks that by and large, we are going to see the emergence of two groups. She said that one group will continue to aspire towards marriage and family life, while the other group will remain single, which is “inevitable in a modern city-state like ours”.
