In an interview with Channel NewsAsia, SMU School of Social Sciences Associate Professor of English Literature Kirpal Singh shared his views on the inclusion of a number of Singlish words and phrases in the Oxford English Dictionary, in its March updates. Associate Prof Singh considers Singlish a “National Heritage”, as being the authentic language for Singaporeans speaking English. On the international recognition of Singlish, he noted that a lot of Singaporeans whom are very sceptical about Singlish expressions will now have to rethink and reflect on whether they should continue to censor such “Singaporeanism”, or learn to accept and embrace it. He stressed that it is the appropriateness of a word or a phrase that ultimately will give Singapore a definition on the international arena, adding that we should stop feeling apologetic about the use of Singlish.
