Paralympic champion and SMU School of Social Sciences undergraduate Yip Pin Xiu was featured in a QS Wow article which highlighted her impressive feats at the Rio Olympics last September where she smashed her own world records and went on to win the S2 50m and 100m backstroke events. Pin Xiu said that she is also grateful to SMU for enabling her to participate in overseas competitions during term time as well as granting her a year’s leave of absence to train for the Rio paralympics. Despite her circumstances, Pin Xiu has demonstrated exemplary leadership, resilience, commitment and discipline. These values resonate with what SMU stands for and to honour her achievements, SMU launched the Yip Pin Xiu Scholarship, which will commence from August 2017.
Articulating the scholarship’s objective, SMU Provost Professor Lily Kong said: “SMU places strong emphasis on a holistic educational approach for all its students. The Yip Pin Xiu Scholarship will offer outstanding athletes the opportunity to pursue their undergraduate studies here at SMU in an athlete-friendly and supportive environment. Pin Xiu is not only an ambassador for sports, but a role-model and inspiration to all Singaporeans.”
