Commenting on the Squid Game phenomenon, SMU Assistant Professor of Arts and Culture Management Hoe Su Fern said many of the show's themes provide "meme fodder". She added, "There are many elements to the show that have primed it to go viral. These enable the digital viral effect without needing one to focus on or buy into the violence, or even finish watching the series." These meme-ready themes include childhood games to evoke a sense of a simpler past, a yearning heightened by the uncertainty of the pandemic; catchy tunes and striking visuals; and even social messages that provide a "feel-good factor", such as discussions about social inequality, said Asst Prof Hoe.
