In CNA’s Talking Point Budget Forum 2026, SMU Assistant Professor of Political Science (Education) Nathan Peng said that as students start using artificial intelligence (AI) in their work, the fundamental challenge is how to retain foundational skills. He said that in an AI-enabled world, the competition is not between those who use AI and those who do not, but it is between those who use AI better. As an educator, Asst Prof Peng said the focus is on equipping students with the competencies needed to use AI strategically and critically.
