According to SMU Assistant Professor of Psychology Park Guihyun Grace, the assumption by many that working as a group is superior to working individually does not square with research data. When she was a postgraduate student, Assistant Prof Park observed that even a group of intelligent researchers could make poor-quality decisions. Spurred by her personal experiences, Assistant Prof Park has turned to research to dissect the group decision making process. In the future, she hopes to see more process-oriented group research on organisations. She noted that current research merely studies individuals in groups, with little or no focus on how they combine to form the whole. She also hopes to apply her research to a large student pool. Given that SMU promotes group work among its students, she noted that there are numerous opportunities to not only better understand the group decision making process, but to also teach the students to better manage team dynamics.
