SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Tay Straughan, said that measures in the government’s second fiscal stimulus package that are targeted at helping graduates find employment will be very popular. The measures, which includes cash handouts, tax rebates and support for businesses, will enable companies to have additional cash to hire new employees. She explained that the pandemic has brought about concerns for employment, and these measures will take a bit of the edge off these students, who are about to enter the workforce at a stage where the economy is at its most challenging. She added that the support from the government to social enterprises also highlighted the importance of community support during crises, and this is why we need to strengthen our social networks, so that we may be dependent on each other.
