Commenting on the findings of a NUS study on urban forests' role in offsetting carbon emissions, SMU Associate Professor of Science, Technology & Society Winston Chow said the NUS paper discusses the limitations of urban reforestation well. Assoc Prof Chow explained the challenges to the sequestration in cities such as Singapore, and added that more data on observed measurements of carbon sequestration of urban forests is needed to validate the models. However, he noted that urban trees have other benefits, making “Singapore's One Million Trees initiative a win-win proposition regardless of the carbon sequestered”.
