SMU [School of Social Sciences] alumnus Lin Zixin was included in an article on young and independent full-time publishers in Singapore. Lin resigned from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs two years ago to join the creative industry. She started work studio “Original Creativity”, and co-founded and published English magazine “Encounters”. Currently based in Beijing, Lin said her inspirations started in her last semester at SMU, when she and three friends published a tourist guidebook “alter:sg” sold at $18 per copy, for fun. The fairly good sales and response became a catalyst for her to publish “Encounters” subsequently. “Encounters” is sold at Books Actually and encounters.sg at $20-28 per issue. Other publishers also shared their experiences about the motivations and challenges of the publishing industry.
