Commenting on the growing number of redevelopments in Singapore and the associated feelings of loss from losing “third spaces” in the community, SMU Assistant Professor of Sociology (Education) George Wong noted that people associate these places with good memories and vibes, so when they get threatened by redevelopment, people experience a sense of dread, adding that even if it is not entirely lost, the place will never be the same again. Asst Prof Wong also opined that the government is paying more attention to the fact that conserving culture is not just about the built environment, and the public is pushing them towards the idea of an intangible culture, like how certain brands and locations and the intersection of them could mean something to specific communities.
