A recent youth dialogue organised by Temasek and held at SMU saw students sharing their views on what makes a city sustainable. The dialogue saw over 100 students and student leaders engaging in discussion with speaker of parliament Tan Chuan-Jin on how they envision living in a sustainable city. SMU School of Social Sciences third-year student and avid scuba diver Jerrie Liao noted that biodiversity and urbanisation are diametrically opposed. She added that for cities to grow and people to live in, we will need the ecosystem services required by nature. Ms Liao had cultivated an interest in ocean conservation while studying at SMU.
