In a live studio interview with Channel NewsAsia, SMU School of Social Sciences Associate Professor of English Literature Kirpal Singh shared his thoughts on what does it mean to be Singaporean and the subject of national identity. He listed thrift, hard work and language as the three defining qualities which makes him a Singaporean, adding that it is silly to expect a singular answer when it comes to national identity given the complex world that we live in. Associate Prof Singh also noted that the idea of multiple identities is not unique to Singaporeans, and be believes that we will be witnessing a lot more variations to the theme of being a Singaporean.
