SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan, who is also Director for the SMU Centre for Research on Successful Ageing, noted that in the current society, children are typically raised by the mother who is a female, and the father who is a male. Any changes to this arrangement could affect the development and welfare of the child, leading to adverse effects. Citing divorce as an example, she added that breakdowns in family relationships and remarriages are inevitable, and that children will also be affected by these changes. Therefore, we must try our best to ensure that the child is protected in the process.
