While the retirement age helps older workers by allowing them to stay employed and continue earning their salaries, SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan, who is also Director of ROSA, explained how re-employment helps younger workers and ensures older employees are not seen as liabilities to an organisation. To Prof Straughan, doing away with a retirement age is "the employment strategy we should strive towards, particularly for resource-scare Singapore." She also pointed to the importance of the concept of retirement itself, and cautioned against losing “sight of the golden period of post-retirement where we live for ourselves, enjoy family and friends, and take joy in giving back to our communities”.
