SMU Assistant Professor of Sociology Nafis Hanif was interviewed for an article about the psychology behind scamming and the psychological technique used to cheat people. He said scams that target the elderly, for example, exploit their lack of knowledge, their isolation, and possibly even their slower mental reflexes. He also noted that scams are successful precisely because the predator understands the weakness of the prey very well. Assistant Prof Hanif highlighted that there are also scams out there that target other weaknesses and demographics. Investment-related scams, for example, are structured to target young and educated people with money to invest, while love scams channeled through social networking sites and dating sites prey on lonely women.
