SMU undergraduate Yip Pin Xiu is one of the reasons why 2016 could be a year of reckoning for Singapore. Yip is on course to win a gold in the 2016 Rio Olympics, thanks to the world-record time of 1min 01.61sec in the 50m backstroke S2 at the ASEAN Para Games (APG). What is driving her to succeed is the impact that a Paralympic medal win will have on disability sports in Singapore. Pin Xiu noted that Singapore has, with the APG, made a lot of progress in terms of getting heightened interest and awareness in para-sports, and hoped that the momentum will continue in 2016.
