SMU School of Social Sciences undergraduate Yip Pin Xiu won Singapore's first Rio Paralympics gold in style on 10 September - setting a new world record time of 2min 7.09sec in the 100m backstroke (S2) final. She also broke the world record in the 50m backstroke with her split timing of 59.38s in the same race. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong (PM Lee) posted on his Facebook page that Pin Xiu has made Singapore very proud. "Her amazing achievement reminds us that with hard work, determination and grit, we can overcome the odds and come out on top," PM Lee added. Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu said that a public celebration has been planned for Singapore's Paralympians when they return from Rio.
