  Topic: Confucianism and Business Ethics

Abstract:

It is a common misconception that going into business is not a valued occupation choice in the Confucian worldview, which values the cultivated “gentleman” who contributes to society, preferably by taking a position in government. However, historically there have been successful merchants who were closely associated with the Confucian tradition, within which there is a sub-tradition of “Confucian merchants (Rushang).”

Dr Alan Chan, a very successful entrepreneur who founded Petroships, is one of them. He has published many books on Confucianism and established the Qufu Confucius Neo-Institute. He will share with us his rich experience of the relevance of Confucianism in the business world.
