Topic: |
The Politics of Remembering the Korean War: Blockbuster Films, History, and Social Memory |
|
| |
|
Abstract:
Many of the South Korean blockbuster films released in the 1990s and 2000s deal with contentious issues including the division of Korea, the Korean War, and the dark legacy of the Park Chung Hee regime: Shiri 1999; Joint Security Area 2000; Silmido 2003; Tae Guk Gi 2004; Welcome to Dongmakgol 2005. These films probe the “public memory” that is at the very heart of South Korean national identity. They show that the cinematic rewriting of history is a particularly distinct attempt to rearticulate the cultural narratives that define South Korea. These films also proffer a counternarrative of South Korean history, especially that of the Korean War, by examining the inventory of images and stories that constitute the dominant narrative.
