Topic: Beyond Pivot to Asia: A Joint SMU-USC Student Forum on US-Southeast Asian Relations under the Second Obama Administration

Abstract:

President Obama's second term began in January 2013. With trouble spots around the world and problems at home challenging the president's priorities, many observers of American foreign policy are questioning whether the administration's "Pivot to Asia" will continue. Is the policy of "Pivot to Asia" good for the region? What are the challenges the second Obama Administration will face in the Asia-Pacific? A group of Singapore Management University and University of Southern California students will present their recommendations on what the second term Obama Administration could do to improve relations with the region based on a joint report they have produced. In this public forum, co-organized by the School of Social Sciences at SMU and The American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, a panel of leading experts will respond to the recommendations of the joint SMU-USC student report and share their insights and thoughts on the challenges for the American President in the Asia-Pacific region.
