Topic: Migration, Development and Human Rights

Abstract:

For the past few months, 19 SMU students have been working with a number of International Organisations in the region, including the International Organisation for Migration in Bangkok and Jakarta, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Bangkok, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Bangkok and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Singapore. The Symposium is a showcase for the various research projects they have conducted under the join supervision of Assistant Professor Song Jiyoung and the IOs as part of POSC317 Special Projects with International Organisations. Four groups of SMU students will share and present their research outcomes at the Symposium, which include victim identification and national referral mechanisms for trafficking in persons in the Asia-Pacific region, development in public services, and land rights in Southeast Asia. The highlight of the event will be the Game of Public Service Excellence, an offline game the UNDP@SMU team have designed and produced in collaboration with the UNDP Global Centre for Public Service Excellence in Singapore. The Symposium ends with the demonstration of the Game and the participants will have a chance to play it. All are welcome to join the Symposium and learn more about how SMU engages with the UN agencies in the region both academically and practically.
