Please tell us more about yourself.

I’m Calixtus, a third-year student pursuing Politics, Law and Economics (PLE) in the School of Social Sciences. I believe strongly in making the most of my university education and as such have immersed myself in multiple aspects of school life! I served as the Honorary General Secretary in SMU Floorball’s 20th Exco, will be serving as the Honorary Finance Secretary for the 18th SOSCIETY, the Social Sciences Student Society, and am a member of SMU FIDES, the Catholic community in SMU. My engagement in these multiple areas have helped me to pursue a holistic and well-rounded university education.

What made you choose to do a degree in Social Sciences and why choose to do it in SMU?

I chose to do my degree in SMU as I was won over by the different approach which SMU takes to teaching as compared to the other universities. I believed that SMU’s integrative pedagogy would provide me multiple opportunities to learn from others, peers and professors alike, as well as to pick up and hone valuable skills which will put in in good stead as I embark on whatever path I choose to do in the future.

Another appeal of SMU and a driving force behind why I wanted to do a degree in Social Science was the PLE track which was offered by SMU. Back then, it was one of the first of its kind in Singapore and I saw the opportunity to allow myself to explore the different disciplines. Being aware of how many issues in the world are interdisciplinary in nature, such an interdisciplinary course would better allow me to appreciate how the world around me works.

How has learning about Social Sciences changed/benefited you?

After learning about Social Sciences, it has allowed me to engage with and better appreciate the many aspects in which issues can be analysed. I have learnt to not take things at face value but rather to seek to find out why things are being done in a certain way. As I engage more with the Social Sciences, it makes me more aware of the many intricacies that are required to put together a more cogent argument.
