In an interview with Channel NewsAsia, SMU School of Social Sciences Dean Professor James Tang shared his views on the Hong Kong election – what does it reflect, what can we read from the results, what impact will these results have, and how will Beijing respond to this. He pointed out that the Beijing Government is probably a little bit disappointed by the results, “because following the ‘Occupy Central’ movement, they might feel that the establishment forces might be able to gain further electorate support or at least hold on to the seats they have”. He added that the sentiments have not moved towards supporting the pro-establishment forces. Prof Tang also noted that he would not be surprised if Beijing takes the initiative to engage in conversations with certain groups from the non-establishment camp, people they feel they could influence, or try to secure support.
