Sharing his views on multiculturalism, SMU Assistant Professor of Political Science (Education) Nathan Peng observed that it was unsurprising that Singaporeans felt the national identity had strengthened over the past decade. He noted that Singapore is still a relatively young nation, where less than 50 years ago, many residents regarded themselves as temporary economic migrants with roots elsewhere. He added that Singaporeans can simultaneously embrace a multicultural national identity that celebrates diversity while expecting foreigners to adhere to specific practices and beliefs that Singaporeans believe define their society.
