In an interview on the rising trend of young single Singaporeans, SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan shared her views on the reasons behind the statistics, and why Singaporean women in particular are not getting married. She also highlighted the differences between a “single by choice” and also a “single by circumstance”, noting that the latter group faces “structural barriers” that makes it hard for them to find time to get to know other singles and get married. Prof Straughan wondered if perhaps more could be done to make it easier for singles who would like to expand their social networks to do so.
