SMU School of Social Sciences Dean Professor James Tang was interviewed by a Chinese current affairs programmes for a special feature on the Xi-Trump summit (referring to China President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump) held last Thursday and Friday. Prof Tang shared his views on a wide array of issues, such as the significance and agenda of the summit, the outcomes that both leaders were hoping to achieve from this summit, as well as the future direction of US-China bilateral relations. He also weighed in on the progress and breakthroughs on a range of contentious issues, such as the US trade deficit, North Korea’s nuclear programme and the South China Sea dispute. Prof Tang stressed that the meeting is a good platform for both countries to forge a stable and dynamic relationship and set a framework for future talks.
