The Social Sciences Freshmen Camp 2017 revolved around a perplexing mystery: Four cordially invited friends gathered together for a friend’s wedding only to discover a pool of blood and a missing bride. With only 72 hours and the help of the groom, the four friends must come together to uncover the truth and find the missing bride. Would the four friends be able to find the culprit or become the next victim?

On 17 April 2017, the School of Social Sciences hosted a public forum for over 50 participants at the School of Social Sciences Seminar Room 5-1 on the topic of Challenges and Opportunities in Family Care for Older Persons in ASEAN+3. Population ageing and the well-being of older persons are major emerging challenges for families, communities, and governments in much of Asia. Traditionally, support and care for the elderly are met within the family. The state and communities typically provide limited care services for the older population.

On 10 January 2017, the School of Social Sciences hosted a public forum for over 180 participants at the Mochtar Riady Auditorium on the topic of Singapore, Green Finance and the Collaborative Challenge. This event was jointly organized by the SMU School of Social Sciences, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA). The forum was organized with the intention to provide insights on the nexus between sustainable finance and collaborative action.

On 1 November 2016, the School of Social Sciences hosted the SMU-J.P. Morgan Symposium for 60 participants at the SMU Administration Building on the topic of Managing Skills Challenges in ASEAN-5. The symposium was based on a research study jointly conducted by Associate Professor Tan Kim Song (Faculty Member, School of Economics) and Professor James Tang (Dean, School of Social Sciences).

The School of Social Sciences hosted its annual Dean’s List Award Ceremony at the SMU Music and Drama Lab on 30 September 2016. The Dean’s List Award is given to a select group of Bachelor of Social Science undergraduates who have obtained excellent course grades in the preceding academic year. Those who attended the ceremony were personally presented with a crystal plaque and a certificate by Professor James Tang (Dean, School of Social Sciences) for their outstanding accomplishments.
